In a bleak Belgian industrial town, teenage lovers Bruno and Sonia survive on her meager welfare and his petty thefts. With a baby on the way, Sonia worries about the child's future. After Jimmy's birth, Bruno's indifference opens a disturbing opportunity: childless couples are willing to pay a great deal for a baby like theirs.
