Thierry Frémaux is a prominent figure in French cinema. Since 2004, he has contributed to the success of the renowned Cannes Film Festival as the General Delegate. Born in 1960, he grew up in the suburbs of Lyon, where he studied the social history of cinema and worked as a volunteer at the Institut Lumière from its inception. He became its artistic director in 1997. In 1999, he joined Gilles Jacob as the artistic delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, while remaining loyal to the Institut Lumière, of which he is still the director. His film Lumière! L’aventure commence, released in 2016, narrates the beginnings of cinema and the extraordinary birth of the seventh art, thanks to the Lumière brothers.
