About the 7th edition
At just 39 years of age, Justin Hurwitz is already one of the world's most renowned film music composers. Right from the start, he and Damien Chazelle, an inseparable duo from Harvard University, enjoyed dazzling success with Whiplash (2014). Chazelle's constant tension between the self-sacrifice of a young jazz drummer and the extreme severity of his mentor is countered by Hurwitz's tense, mechanical, almost anti-jazz tunes... This clever reversal already established the future double Oscar® winner as a master in the art of scripting music.
Two years later, he joined Damien Chazelle to compose the melodramatic jazz world of La La Land (2016), a vibrant tribute to Los Angeles and Hollywood, as well as to classic American and French musicals. From the very opening, ‘Another Day of Sun’ ends with a cacophony of car horns... enough to set the tone for the film, whose arrangements are the perfect accompaniment to the journey of two people who intertwine and detach themselves in a disenchanted world.
He won two Oscars® and four Golden Globes® for LaLaLand, First Man and Babylon.
Justin Hurwitz also took part in a meeting on Friday 15 March at Le Capitole, followed by a screening of the film ‘Whiplash’. (Re)watch the meeting and his interview on our YouTube channel.
