Born in Sweden in 1974, Ruben Östlund was so passionate about skiing that he made three films on the subject, reflecting his taste for long sequence shots, a taste that he structured and developed throughout his film studies and which to this day remains a trademark of his work.

His first feature film, The Guitar Mongoloid (2005), won the FIPRESCI prize at the Moscow Film Festival. All his subsequent films have had their world premieres at Cannes, starting with ‘Happy Sweden’ (2008), presented in the Un Certain Regard category. In 2010, he won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale for his short film ‘Incident bancaire’, a project that allowed him to experiment with techniques and styles that would mark his next feature film, ‘Play’ (Directors' Fortnight, 2011), which won the Nordic Council Film Prize. He returned to Un Certain Regard with Snow Therapy (2014), which won the Jury Prize and was shortlisted for the Oscars. ‘The Square’ (2017) was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar, and won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, a prize he won again for his sixth feature “Triangle of Sadness” (2022), also nominated for two Golden Globes and three Oscars.

Ruben Östlund was at the Rencontres 7e Art Lausanne for a discussion at the Capitole with Frédéric Maire on Sunday 10 March, followed by the screening of ‘Snow Therapy’. He also presented ‘Play’ on Monday 11 March at Pathé les Galeries. His interview is also on our YouTube channel.
