The challenges of safeguarding and conserving cinematographic works.

We all have our cult films that we love to see again and again. Whether it's The Godfather, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind or Blade Runner, these films and so many other masterpieces would disappear without the painstaking work of conservation and restoration specialists who work to give them a second life.

The proof is in the pudding: to celebrate its 50th anniversary, The Godfather returned to the cinema on 23th February in a sumptuously restored version, much to the delight of film fans! It's a fascinating subject that Rencontres 7e Art Lausanne wants to explore by bringing together renowned experts for a conference dedicated to the challenges of safeguarding, archiving and restoring film heritage. These committed professionals - curators, filmmakers, foundations and scientists - will share their experience to enlighten an audience keen to learn more about the mission of conserving works and their future.

This exclusive conference is being organised to coincide with the Swiss premiere of the documentary Film, The Living Record of our Memory, in the presence of its director Inés Toharia Téran. The talk will be followed by a screening of Derborence, restored by the Cinémathèque Suisse. A selection of newly restored films will also be screened during Think Cinema Lausanne.
